The Root Canal Treatment Process
Diagnostics & Preparation
Your dentist will start by conducting a thorough examination and reviewing your x-rays to identify the cause of your dental pain. If there is an infection in your tooth, they will assess the severity to determine if root canal therapy is necessary. If a root canal is needed, your dentist will numb the area before beginning the procedure and discuss sedation options with you.
Removing Decay & Infected Pulp
After ensuring you are comfortable and completely numb, your dentist will start by removing any decayed or infected material. Starting with the enamel, the dentist will work towards the pulp. Once the infected pulp is removed, the canals will be cleaned and the area will be flushed with a special disinfectant to get rid of any remaining infection.
Filling & Sealing
After thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing your tooth, a rubber-like material called "gutta-percha" will be used to fill the interior. This inert material replaces the extracted pulp and provides support to the tooth while maintaining its structure. Following the filling of the interior, the tooth will be restored with either a filling or a dental crown, depending on the level of decay and the amount of healthy enamel remaining.
